AI Can’t Surprise You. That’s Why We Still Need Humans.

The other day, I asked ChatGPT to write me a joke about marketing. It churned out something predictable about “going viral.”

It was clever, sure. But it wasn’t… surprising.

And that’s the thing. AI can be smart, fast, and eerily accurate—but it struggles to do the one thing that makes creativity truly magical: deliver the unexpected.

Creativity Is the Art of Breaking Patterns

AI thrives on patterns—it’s what makes it great at predicting trends or automating tasks. But true creativity? That’s the stuff that comes from breaking those patterns.

Like that time I was leading a campaign for Honda in Hawaii. The data said one thing. The AI confirmed it. And the logical next step was clear.

But then, I decided not to follow that direction and said, “What if we threw that script out the window?”

That one unexpected moment—a random spark born of intuition, experience, and maybe a little caffeine—turned into an idea that crushed benchmarks and won awards.

AI Is the Tool, Not the Genius

Don’t get me wrong—I love AI. It’s like having a supercharged assistant that never sleeps. It helps us sift through noise, organize chaos, and save hours on the mundane.

But when it comes to creating something that grabs people by the heart, makes them laugh, or even changes how they see the world, AI alone doesn’t cut it. That’s where humans come in.

Because no algorithm will ever know:

  • How a late-night brainstorm feels.
  • The wild leap your gut tells you to take.
  • Or the rush of connecting two totally random ideas and watching them click.

So, What’s the Future?

AI is here to stay, and I’m all for it. But the leaders, the visionaries, the artists? We’re the ones who decide how to wield it.

It’s like giving a painter the best brushes in the world—tools are useless without the soul to guide them.

Now, Over to You:

What’s the most unexpected moment of creativity you’ve experienced? Did AI play a role—or was it all human ingenuity? I’d love to hear your stories.

Because if there’s one thing we can agree on: surprises will always come from people.
